What is the best striping machine to start with?
The answer can vary depending on your situation. Something like the Graco 3400 or Titan 3500 is a great starting machine.
What size tip should I use?
Most common tips are going to be in the 3XX and 4XX sizes. I most often use a 419 tip.
When should I use waterborne paint?
There are some scenarios where waterborne paint makes more sense. For example reflective glass beads are more effective as waterborne paint doesn’t dry as fast as solvent paints.
When should I use oil based paint?
I used Oil based paints a majority of the time. Certain types of sealcoat can mess with the color on oil based paints though.
How do you switch from waterborne to oil based paint?
You flush all the paint out and then flush solvent into the sprayer and then you can switch paint types.
How do you store your sprayer?
Flush out all the paint and then fill the pump with a storage fluid designed for your sprayer.
How much should I charge?
The prices are going to be different in every market I’ve seen people charge anywhere from $0.20/linear ft. to $1.15/linear ft.
Do I need to clean the surface before I stripe?
It’s best practice to make sure all the loose dirt and debris are brushed/blown away, however, most well maintained lots require very little prep for traffic paint.
How often do you re-stripe?
Typically it’s every 1-3 years depending on weather and traffic.
How can I remove traffic paint from asphalt or concrete?
There are 3 main methods for paint removal. You can use Chemicals like muriatic acid and pressure washing, Grinding/shotblasting, or cover up the paint with black or gray paint.
What size handicap stencil should I get?
The most common size is 39” handicap person with a 48” box
How cold can it be for me to stripe?
I don’t recommend going below the product specifications which are typically 40-50ºF. Some paints can go colder and be fine though.
What’s the best way to clean up spilled paint?
Get to it quick, if it’s a small spill some solvent and a wire brush will get it right up.
